Question Cloudy eye

I bought three Nigerian Dwarf does a week ago today. One of them, Beauty, had slightly runny eyes when I got her. She's 9 years old (retiring with me ) and the breeder said not to worry, she usually has that. I've been watching her and they haven't been any worse until tonight. One of her eyes is clouded over, although it isn't any runnier than it has been. I've put a dab of antibiotic ointment in it - is there anything else I should be doing? Everything else is fine, she's eating and drinking well, no snotty nose, droppings normal. I'm wondering if she may have banged into something with being the new goat - she's in with my "big" goats because they're all hornless and so is she.

Fortunately, she's a sweet old thing and doesn't object to being handled. I offered her some hay after the treatment and she nuzzled through the hay to lick my hand.

You have pinkeye! Some LA2000 drops straight in the eye work well. Wipe/flush eye frequently with warm saline. Make sure you use a clean towel each time, and don't touch anything/goat/yourself afterwards.

It will ulcerate and get worse if you don't treat - also put her in a dark area of the barn or a room for a while. Sun will irritate it further.

Good luck!

This is a good example of why it's a good idea to quarantine any new goats you buy. Now your big goats have been exposed to pinkeye. I would separate your doe from the rest of your goats until the treatment has taken. Wash your hands really god after handling her, before touching any other animals. A friend suggests spraying the eye with cheap red wine and giving shots of Biomycin or LA200.

Well, I've got some pinkeye spray out in the barn that the previous owners left - I'll have to see if there's any left in it.

Edited to add: They aren't going outside now, anyway, I haven't got a pen built for them and we're up to the eyeballs in mud! So sunshine isn't an issue right now - even if I leave the top door open, she's in the stall farthest from it.

you do have pinkeye, and watch the whole herd for it now,, and make sure you wash your hands so you don't get it or become a carrier. i use a NFZ puffer, or terrimaycin ointment and if either one of those works i use penn in the eye. and have had great success with these. good luck!

I have a goat that also has a cloudy eye. I don't have any LA2000, but I do have the terramycin and pennacillin. So, you put some of the pennicillin directly in the eye? Thanks

Pinkeye spray bottle was empty, so I've just been carrying on with the ointment - it seems to be clearing up, and everyone else looks fine, including the two does that came with her.
