A little disappointed here...

I had the vet out yesterday and he ultrasounded 6 of my goats that I was unsure of their breeding dates and I wanted to know 100% if they were bred or not.Well 3 of them are defintley pregnant and I got to see the little kids kicking around. So the 3 that are PG are 2 pygmies and my spotted reg. nubian doe. The other 3 that didn't take are my other nubian,my alpine X and my Lamancha.I was so hoping to really get to milking this year but at least I have the one doe I guess and I could milk some of the pygmies.

But I really thought the ultrasound was neat, never had a goat ultrasounded before, only horses.

How long did the buck run with the girls? I always just leave a buck w/ them after I think they've been bred to specified buck....(I'm using 2 diff. bucks) I had one that didnt take but cycled again 17 days later....and the buck did his deed again...

We watch the heat cycle and only expose our does at that time,I like exact dates of breeding so I know when to start expecting kids,I am very particular on this.We have never had any problems with this method in the past.I did use my pygmy buck on 2 of the dairy goats,so it could be that he just couldn't reach to do his job efficiently. But the Lamancha was bred to the Reg. nubian buck,so I don't know why she didn't take.I guess there is the possibility I didn't catch her in her standing heat. But he did breed with her 5 times in 2 days.

FWIW, I'm a large animal vet tech and I had two does U/S not PG last year who were indeed PG, we just, for some reason, could not see those babies...I've found that in older does, or those with multiples, it is sometimes easier to find those small babies and in first-timers or younger does it can be tougher. Just my two cents...oh, and I'm assuming they were all at least 40 days along, right?

longearsfarm,
2 were bred in the beginning of dec and the lamancha was bred in Jan all would be 1st time freshners.

dbarj,
3 of the 6 goats ultrasounded are for sure pregnant(2 pygmies and 1 nubian) but I also have 10 pygmies that are for sure pregnant too.So we will be having lots of kids here starting the end of april.

Hey you! i was really thankful to have you here yesterday and confirm my girls. Sorry you did not get all that you were hoping for. But maybe like longearsfarm said, they could still be pg and you guys just could not see the babes. Keep your fingers crossed. I take it you are back home now?
