really odd goat heats....

As an earlier post said, I am trying to write down my goat's heats so I know when about they will go into heat this winter breeding season. I started writing heats down the biggining of this month. Daisy just went into heat. Well, now I am really confused with Boston. She has been in a perpetual heat this whole month!! here were the extreme heats :
oct. 1st
oct. 6th
oct. 13th
oct. 20th
oct. 24th
These are the really serious heats, screaming, grunting, trying to get to the buck desperately...... and discharge galore! the hair on her tail has been sticky and stuck togeather this whole month, usually it is only like that a couple of days. this whole month has been a perpetual heat!. I will let her out of the pasture sometimes while feeding or doing outside chores because she follows me around, but she would not leave the bucks gate whenever I let her out, this whole month!! I thought that was odd...
is it maybe because most goats are bred this time of year, or her body is telling her that this is the best time to get bred?

also, I have heard about other breed bucks having a "rut". do pygmy bucks have a rut? I didnt think they did because does can be bred year round, but i could be wrong....

thanks,
~Dona

Hmm..she could be cystic. But I am not sure how pygmys heat cycles are....but I know when they are cystic they act in full blown heat almost all the time.

I believe the only way to get the cyst to pop is to lute them. But I am not positive.

It is called a ovarian cyst. People get them (I had one once..and yes in people they HURT!) to but in goats they react different. It doesn't hurt them just causes them to act in heat almost all the time and they won't get bred.

When you lutlyse them it causes the ovarian cyst to burst allowing the doe to have normal heat cycles again. Now this is what my friend told me. She used to be a vet tech.

But I would look around on line at ovarian cysts in goats and what not.

I got this off of this website http://www.goatwisdom.com/ch8diseases/infertility.html

"Ovarian problems

Ovarian cysts are quite common in goats. They seem more common in "middle-aged" or older does. The doe with ovarian cyst(s) may exhibit "nymphomania," meaning that it seems she is in heat all the time. Or there can just be frequent heats or heats with irregular distances between them, or even masculine behavior. Generally, she will look pretty healthy. This condition can sometimes be treated with hormone injections, which are only available through your veterinarian. Treatment is not always successful. In cattle, the cysts can be manually ruptured, but this may be a whole lot more difficult in goats.

She may have non-functioning ovaries, which will be small. This can be due to low energy feed intake, stress or illness.

Ovarian difficulties can also take the form of too much or too little hormone production which can lead to disturbed cycles, hair loss or constant heat and even reduced growth.

There are also a few cases where the doe will cycle every 42 days, which may indicate problems with one of the ovaries.

Any of these situations usually indicate that you need to discuss the matter with your vet.

Anestrus or irregular cycles

From injuries, endocrine problems or from some disease. In goats, Vitamin E and Vitamin A may help. "

Hope this helps you understand a bit more..

no, she wont be bred till Feb/March.
since the cyst isnt dangerous for her, ill wait longer to tell the vet, just to make sure....
she is healthy otherwise, though. perfectly alert. right now it's not a serious heat but she still flags and has discharge.
thanks everybody!
