Guess this goat! - Goats

I bought her today from a guy who got her from an auction.....I guess because of the forked teat?? He told me she was a toggenburg?? What do you think?? How old do you think she is?? (I don't know this one) She is supposed to be bread to a Boer and should kid in January. I am completly new to goats so I really don't know a whole lot about her. She is very gentle though, even if she doesn't work out for a family milker she is a good yard mower!! Let me know what you think! Thanks!

I don't know much of anything that you asked for, but I do know that "forked" teats are supposed to be a trait of a Boer goat, ALL of our females have them, although boers can come with only two teats. She sure is cute though, love the face markings, we have a mutt goat that has the same forehead mark. Well that is all that I know, see ya, bye.

I think she's a Toggenburg (cross, maybe?). Sure is cute! I love hairy goats...

As you can see me daughter is completly in love with her already and we just brought her home a few hours ago! My husband is still shaking his head trying to figure out how on earth I talked him into a goat!! I love her! She is sweet as can be! Well, sweet except to the dogs! I tried to take my GSD out and introduce him, he was trying to sniff her and lick her, and she hauled off and head butted him HARD! I thought it was funny because this is my DH's dog and he tinds to be a little pushy and domenient and now he doesn't even want to go around her! Hard lesson to learn!

I was thinking she was a Toggenburg cross also because she looks like a Toggenburg but seems really hairy!

She looks like a Toggenburg with a little something in there to make the ears a bit floppy......maybe a bit of Nubian blood? I have seen Toggs with that much hair who were fullbloods, but the ears make me suspect a bit of a mix. She looks like a big girl, should raise some nice meaty babies!

She looks just like a Togg to me. Toggs are generally more hairy than most other breeds, especially around the rear legs, as she is. Plus her markings are absolutely Toggenburg. About the ear thing, it might have gotten injured at some point, or could have been folded at birth and never fixed.

I agree she looks like a full Togg to me. Dairy breeds can and will sometimes get forked teats or double teats or extra teats. Not a wanted trait in show lines but for home use or meat use perfectly fine in my opinion.

She sure is a looker .

Your daughter sure looks like one happy little girl . I would be to if I got a new goat at her age .

Have fun with your new gal!

Her right ear is the one that is a little floppy and it has been injured so I am guessing that is why it flops. Looks like a barbed wire fence about sliced it in two or something.

I am going to have to get her a goat buddy! My husband is really trying to figure out what he has gotten himself into! I feel so sorry for her because everytime I go down there she wants to be petted and then when I walk off she starts crying for me and does that for a few minutes before she calms down.

From my understanding a goat is less likely to get into mischief if it has a buddy?? Because it doesn't get bored?? I am trying to get my facts straight for my defence case against my husband! Read somewhere last night that you need a goat per family member to have a good amount of milk and I thought his eyes would pop out of his head! That means four goats and he didn't even want the first one! You should see how soft he goes when she rubs up against his leg and lets him pet her! He won't admit it though!

Yes, on second look, it does look like its just one ear that is "airplane" so an injury would be my guess too. So I agree with the others, looks full Togg to me. And yes, goats are very sociable creatures, and need a companion. If they are decent milkers, I can't imagine that you would need a goat per person to supply enough milk. I drink a lot of milk, but even I wouldn't drink that much. A decent milker should give at least a gallon a day(most give more).........I would think more like a goat for every two members of your family. Something along that line.......

Congratulations on your new girl! Now you need to buy some clippers and trim her up a bit! At least when you start milking her, you'll want to trim the hair around her udder so you're not pulling it and fishing it out of the milk! I'd be interested to know how she milks with that forked teat, there's days when I have trouble getting into the pail with normal ones - up my sleeve, on the milkstand . . . .

Yep, you definitely need another one just to keep her company, they really don't like to be alone. But I don't think you need one per family member as far as milk goes - I've got one milking right now and the two of us can't keep up to the supply. She's a Saanen and she's giving a good four quarts a day right now. Ah well, my cheesemaking supplies came in the mail, so I have to get experimenting.

Enjoy your girl (has she got a name?) and be careful, they're addictive. I now have seven goats, started out in May with two! LOL

I won't mind the extra milk come spring because I am going to raise a pig to eat and I already have chickens and dogs to eat up the excess!

I think right now we are going to name her Bonnie. Since our last name is Bowerman we have been going with the B theme so far.....Big Mama(cow), Biddy(cow), Bosie(pig*gone*), Besie(pig*gone*) etc. So now we have Bonnie the goat. Sure hope we don't run out of B names!!

I haven't named the chickens yet! I am still trying to tell them all apart!

She looks full toggenburg to me too. The forked teat was probably just a genetic flub. I've seen in 10 yrs + of goat babies, one set of fish teats, and one with one extra small teat up higher than the real teat. I've never had a boer on the place. Not that I wouldn't just haven't.

As long as she gives milk who cares.

IMO she looks like a long haired Alpine. We did have some Alpines but we got rid of them. They looked like your goat but had short hair.

Bonnie's a nice name - short, easy to remember. I'm terrible at names, it usually takes me a week or two to name my new animals. Our goats are Bronwyn and Bridget (the Nigerian dwarfs), Sara the l'il Alpine brat, Angel the Nubian cross and finally, Polly the Saanen. My SO named the last two We haven't named the Nigie babies yet, they're just the Squeaky Toys . If I keep the little girl, I may name her Maia after the cartoon bee LOL

I would say she is mixed with boar goat. but cute as can be, and yes, she can be milked, andher milk will probably be very good. I hope you bought two. goats need a buddy, they are herd animals, so if you don't have another one, get her a budddy, oh I am sorry , you said that she is bred? well then she will have company soon. lol.
she looks like a real sweetie to me.

No one else has answered this for you, if you look at the "teeth" picture up close, it looks like she has all adult teeth, but the very last-ehich would mean a 3 year old.I also think she is full togg! Enjoy.

Thanks for answering the age thing.....I have been trying to make a guess but looking at pictures in a book just isn't the same as looking in a goat's mouth!!

She is kinda in trouble right now.....yesterday evening I had her in the yard "mowing" and she was tethered to a tire so she could walk around freely. Well I guess she deceided to play ring around the trees and broke off two of our two year old bradford pears. Hubby was not very happy! Needless to say she had to go back to the barn after that! And here I was outside trying to talk to her and tell her she did a very bad thing and all she could do was try to nibble on my ear!! Makes it really hard to be upset when you have a goat talking to you in your ear and nibbling on it!!
