Funny. It's amazing what they can figure out on their own. My little Connemara stallion had a very difficult time figuring out the trot extensions, kept trying 'faster' instead of 'longer' for such a long time. Trainer said that one day the light bulb very obviously went on and he *got* it, so she praised and quit for the day. Later she looked out and he was in the pasture, doing an extended trot down the fenceline.
