Fat pony pictures

Murphy has been dogging my steps the last couple of days. First a day of rain and mud. Then a day of chasing ponies around the upper pasture after the Hackney Pony mares ran straight through the fence ... they are now on lockdown in the corral while we are fixing fence ... still! Then a day in town shopping for work boots for DH and a new pair of rubber boots for me, since mine decided to spring a leak on the last day of rain. And a close call there, I thought I was going to have to end up with BRIGHT PINK farm boots with blue horsies on them ... EEEK! Fortunately, I did find plain, dark colored rubber boots in my size but can you just imagine how humiliating it would have been to have "real" horse people come to visit and actually SEE me in something like that???

Anyway ... in defense of the fat pony mare, I will have to say she is rapidly putting on winter coat, which makes her look even more fluffy ... but believe me, it can't all be blamed on winter coat! But even fluffy, she has a gorgeous little pony head.

I will be eternally grateful I did NOT have to buy them. I really don't know if I could have brought myself to that point, I honestly think I'd have tried to patch the leak on the old ones before I'd have gotten to the point of buying PINK farm boots ... and the blue horsies made it just that much worse!

SFM, I used that pic as my screensaver about a year ago. Had my DD believing that unicorns DO exist.

Absolutely adorable pony!

She is lovely! Great substance, (asided from fluffiness and hairiness.) fantastic bone. Her beautiful face just puts the cherry on top, doesn't it?

She's not THAT bad! A little well-upholstered but not grossly fat.

If that is fat, then Tony and Neo are not just "ready for winter" like I keep telling them................(and myself)

I suppose a lot of my attitude about "too fat" in horses and ponies is based on my upbringing on a cattle ranch. Horses had to be able to go out and do a full day's work at any time. A horse carrying significant extra weight couldn't last a full day, couldn't do the work and would tire and be more likely to stumble. Even more likely could develop saddle sores or girth sores because the withers disappear with that much fat and you have to cinch so tight to keep the saddle in place.

The other part of that is from my breeder's side of things ... one of the things my first equine vet kept emphasizing when I first started working on a serious breeding program was that fat mares were harder to get in foal than mares that weren't fat. For him, ideally, he wanted brood mares to come on to green grass in the spring needing a little extra weight and be gaining the month before they were bred. He raised racing QHs himself, had a number of TB mares who can be particularly 'iffy' breeders and he had a high conception rate on those mares.

I know I'm different from most horse owners in that I'm actually more concerned about horses that are overweight than horses where you can see a suggestion of ribs and I know that is not the case with most people.

She's so pretty - looks almost like a miniature Shire with the long hair, pretty face and solid build. (See, she's not fat, she's solid!) I approve!

Well upholstered! lol

Aw, c'mon- pink boots aren't too bad. The blue horseys... maybe.

My favorite pair of barn boots were pink. Really well made and with a nice, snug liner. They were short boots and awesome for warmer weather when muckin' out the barn. Wonder where those disappeared to?

She is lovely - and my word i am getting to adore Blarney

I'm the same way with all my animals - cats and dogs too -especially in my competetive life the overly fluffy dogs concern me greatly - the hint of a rib is a good thing ... though I do have 2 dogs that are hard to keep weight on -I'd much rather have that than the other way round
