Wow, and he is a good looking fellow! It shouldn't be so hard to amputate that, but then how out of whack would that foot be, like toed out or whatever?

How odd. I haven't seen anything like that.

He is a beautiful horse otherwise. It's a shame.

I kind of wonder why they kept him. I think when he was born, I would have had a vet consult to see what we could do about it. If there was nothing to be done about it, I think I would have considered euthing him. Is that aweful? He looks very well taken care of, but I would worry about him ending up in some kind of freak show if I ever had to sell him.

Isn't in strange how the "extra" looks like half of a cloven hoof? (versus having another rounded horse hoof)

I think they thought of freak show money when they kept him. Wonder what they are asking?

I have seeen a horse with this same problem once, I almost bought it. It was a Belgian horse and was a colt. They sold it at auction, only brought 250 bucks. I had the same Idea, hit the fair seasons with a freak show tent " Come on in and see the five footed horse" I could just see the money rolling in, but I didn`t buy it, thought I`d let someone else make the money. > Marc

I can't see how the QH assn would register such a horse, unless they were not told about it.

Could this be another scam post like the Zedonk?

Doesn't the AQHA require photos for registration? Other than that I think the only requirement is AQHA registered parents. I do know thee don't have breed inspections.

see craigslist is known for liars, i don't think the horse is registered. i bet if someone contacted the aqha & asked about this in particular, it wasn't registered. that's where they try to "get" people on craigslist is with the "papered" part & other bs. that's why i find it VERY hard to buy any animals off there unless i get to thoroughly inspect the animals first.

Heck I thought it would have an extra leg..that is just a spare toe. Having seen the progression charts of footed ancesters to 3 toed to one toe(hoof), I also think it could have been removed as a foal. JMO

I do not recall ever sending photos in with my registration application for a two year old a few years ago. I "think"(I can have pretty bad recall) that I just sent in the breeder certificate(not sure of the technical term) signed by the breeder(who owned both parents) and of course the money.

Honestly, I think unless they were sent shots of the front hooves, this defect would have been easily overlooked. (in my opinion, you know someone looking at picture after picture of horse and not really looking for extra digits.)

According to the AQHA site (link below) all paperwork for registration must include proper photos. If the "special" horse is registered there is more wrong with AQHA than I thought...

I wouldn't blame the AQHA. It would be easy to hide with camera angles or a little photoshop.

It's more about HYPP, HERDA, GBED and the way they were addressed, but registering a malformed horse would be par for the course.

Wow, I never heard of GBED and had to google it. I didn't see if anyone has traced the genetic disorder to a particular sire or bloodline like Impressive/HYPP and Poco Bueno/HERDA. But they did say it was only found in Quarter Horses and Paints with QH bloodlines.

From what I can gather GBED is tracing back to King P-234, it's recessive and occurs in foals who are homozygous for the GBED allele. Scary stuff...
