Secretariat Movie

Is coming out on DVD this week. It is a great movie only was in the movie theater for a few weeks. Just a great movie for the entire family.

Just as a note there is much more to the story than I ever knew.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I have to tell you about this.

When my daughter was in high school about fifteen years ago, she was working as a waitress at a restaurant near an interstate. Some customers, a lady and a man, began to ask her many questions about some farm machinery they'd seen on their drive. My daughter explained to them that what they saw were mechanical pea pickers, said there is a cannery less than a mile from where they were sitting, and explained about how the fields are harvested and the product hauled. They asked all kinds of questions about local agriculture, and my daughter answered them all.

After a bit they asked if she was a farm girl, and my daughter laughed and said no; but that we live in the country and have horses. The lady brightened and said "You do? What kind?" My daughter told her mostly quarter horses, that she has a favorite, a sweet tempered red mare who had carried her since she was a little girl.

The lady said "I have horses too, I have a picture of my favorite," and pulled out a photograph of her sitting bareback on a mountain of a red horse.

My daughter looked at the photograph as shock washed over her and said

"That's Secretariat. And you're Penny Tweedy."

The lady said yes, and seemed genuinely touched to have both of them recognized.

They talked for some time, and my daughter tells me she was as gracious and kind as you could ever ask.

And that is just what the move is all about. It was really a wonderful old fashion movie.
Guess that is way they took it out of the movie theater so soon.

Thank you for sharing that touching story. She was a lucky girl to have that experience.

Didn't see it in the theater and won't at home. Any movie that sensationalizes an industry that wrecks so many horses on a daily basis is NOT a good thing.

Meh, any time you mix money and animals, the critters come out on the losing end.

I still enjoyed the movie.

As soon as I get to town I am going to buy the Bluray of it and then get the DVD version as well in the box, so I can then let my friends see the movie on their DVD Players.
Been to Churchill Downs twice, but not at race time, been in KY. for the National Arabian Horse Show. Could have gone over and watched Arabian Horses being run at the track, but did not do that.

I was visiting my Aunt a long time ago in PA when she told me that a neighbor (on the other side of the mountain) who watched a farm of racing Apps', was having the owner up that weekend to start training the three year olds. As we drove up the lane the mob of horses ran up the field next to us. I will never forget the big red filly I picked out of the bunch. I thought if I only had the money, my wheels started turning until I started to talk to the owner and found out who the sire was. They bred the mare in the group of 100 test mares of Secretariat. Knew no matter how much I had to offer I wasn't getting that one. You could realy see him in her. I later saw an article in a magazine about her (Horse Illustrated I think) sorry to go off subject but it's so nice to tell this to people who appreciate it. I will never forget the look of her, she was that immpressive.

Wanoga, I think I know what you mean. My non-horsey husband, many years ago, was watching a news clip of a horse race on TV and told me to come and look at one of the horses: it was Secretariat and even he was impressed by how the horse moved. Then Secretariat opened up and left the rest of the horses so VERY far behind!

I never saw a horse who drew the eye like he did!

I think I remember seeing that same article ... or an article about that mare anyway, somewhere.

And back in the late 90s a friend of mine had an older TB stallion she stood for several years that was a Secretariat grandson. He was a lovely old gentleman.

My city-boy hubby was watching Secretariat's winning Belmont race at the end of the movie and he was in tears. Even though he doesn't know a whole lot about horses, he could appreciate the moment. It was very touching to watch his reaction! Highly recommend the movie!
