Well, I did it to Tucker last night.
Word to the wise, don't try to trim a tail in the dark when you're tired

My dad always says the difference between a good haircut and a bad is 2 weeks. Unfortunately Tucker can't put a baseball hat over this. At least it won't drag in the mud and he looks happy in spite of it all. What a good looking boy he is!

LOL I butchered one of my Fjords manes the other day , Instead of the nice arch it's supposed to be ? His looks more like stair steps ..... LOL My excuse was it was really cold outside and the scissors started to frost up and stick ...... hee hee

I've never attempted to cut a horses mane or tail. It never looks natural to me!

I think his tail looks fine. Do you think it's too short? It looks straight enough. By comparison to the other tails in the first pic, he's the most presentable.

You hobbed his tail... at least it won't be dragging in the Mud. ;O)
I trim all of my horse's tails for that reason, usually just above the fetlock.
Here's a friend's Icelandic mare... she trims tails like I do. I think it looks good.

He does look very presentable now I trim all my horse's tails like that for showing and it keeps them out of the mud. The tails look fuller and not so scraggly. I also try to keep manes pulled all year so it's not such a big job in spring - even my Arab mare sometimes sports a pulled mane! It looks so cute on her - I think it makes her look like a hunter pony

That's not bad at all!!
I had to cut out a branch that got caught in Shelly's tail, it was all wrapped up. Broke my heart she lost almost half to that branch.
Tucker's looks very nice and groomed

I love it! it looks very nice. I like horses tails cut even, looks flashy to me.
All my horses have trimmed up tails, different lengths depending on each tail.
Kate just got a very short draft style cut, (usually we dont like tails this short, so hers will be growing), I think it looks nice on her. At least it makes her legs look longer!

Aw, thanks guys
I do like a nice neat end to a tail, but I usually go about the length of the horse in Bergere's pic, I got a bit carried away on Tucker.
I'm getting used to it now. I keep Tiempo and Norman's tails a bit more natural because if their breeds (Paso Fino and Morgan, respectively), but I still like them tidied up.

I tend to agree it looks OK esp for the tiem of the year. All the Morgans at my daughters trainers have just gottne trimmed up to about that height otherwise the mud is awful , even the stallion who can udually touch the floor with his tail. Pat sayd it just isnt worth the mess to keep them longer for winter and it sure beats getting whacked with mudballs!

Sorry, I've never seen that done to a horse and it made me laugh 'cause it looks funny!
How do these short tailed horses do in the summer when they have no tail to swish the flies away?
My new mule's tail is almost to the ground. I'll only cut it an inch or so if it touches the ground.

Don't feel bad. it doesn't look too bad. I learned my lesson-actually the girls did- about getting bored, having alcohol and scissors and a halter horse all together....It was not a pretty sight...I still catch heck about it and it was MY horse

We bang all of our horses tails too. It keeps them from being stepped on and it's the "fashion" for dressage horses. Windsong gets hers washed, conditioned and braided up into a mud knot to protect it for the winter. That girl has a gorgeous tail.

Looks good to me. Banging is the fashion for dressage horses, as Lisa in Idaho mentioned, so it looks completely normal to me
