Finally ... photos of the boys

My "babies" have grown up and I finally got photos. After my computer crash last fall, lost everything except their "baby pictures" and finally got organized and did "grownup" ones.

They are 4 and 5 now but this is the first year I will be breeding them. Though you'd never know it by looking these two, they are half-brothers, both out of the same 3/4 warmblood mare I bred, Wichita, who was a Weltstern grand-daughter out of a small Holsteiner mare.

Cody is by my little black Connemara stallion, Stormy, now deceased. He is black, although I've had to lighten the photos so much to get him to show up against the dark vegetation he looks more bay in these photos. He is the image of his sire, just a bit bigger at 14 hands. About all you see of his dam in him is good warmblood type movement and suspension.

Chug is by Popcorn, the pinto half-Welsh stallion I leased for many years that produced so many nice colts out of my warmblood mares. He did the really, really "Ugly Duckling" thing so many warmbloods do and is just now being allowed out in public! Buckskin tovero, and about the only thing he got from his sire was the color. Otherwise, at 13.2 hands, he is literally a sized-down warmblood in conformation, disposition and movement.

Thanks. I'm very pleased with both of them though I still find it odd that the are out of the same mare and are so different. Cody looks so much like Stormy with very little influence from the warmblood (white markings and better dressage type movement) and Chug is practically a clone of his dam except for the color.

I can solve the pony program issue with no problem ... be glad to send you some to start with! I've been trying to convince my friend in Virginia who has Weltstern to add ponies to her program but I haven't convinced her yet.

I have to admit that seeing photos like this is a real ego trip as far as my breeding program goes. However, as Carolyn Miller (who is Weltstern's owner now) remarked after seeing the photos ... it is amazing to see the "Weltstern influence" still so strong in his great-grandkids. Every time she and I talk, we end up mentioning that Weltstern "made" both of our breeding programs ... for me in both warmbloods and the sportponies ... for her in the warmbloods.

Last year, when Weltstern was 28 years old, he had two premium foals at the RPSI inspection. Carolyn and I owned him jointly and Carolyn stood him after I moved here to Kentucky. When I "downsized" to just the ponies, she became the sole owner. Both of our breeding programs are heavily dependent on his offspring. She now has two approved Weltstern sons she stands and I will be breeding to one next year.

Both of these two young sportpony stallions are great-grandsons of Weltstern through their dam and I have two grand-daughters as well in the broodmare herd. And even that far removed from Weltstern himself, you can see his influence in the type and movement.

Only one problem there- I'm really tall and don't quite fit on the ponies
BUT, I always said that when I get older and my bones start creaking when I'm riding, I was going to start driving ponies instead...

Willie would be a gorgeous influence in pony breeding. I've been out to Carolyn's several times and love looking at all the Weltstern clones in the pasture- what a prepotent stallion he is! That movement and style in pony size would be a knockout!

In Montana, I could go out and look at the mare herd in a 600 acre pasture and pick out every single Weltstern foal whether it was from a warmblood mare, a Paint mare or an Arab mare. They all had that "Weltstern look" ...

If I had another 20 years to work on it, I'd love to try combined driving with one of the sportponies. I was looking at this photo of Chug and thinking he'd be a super combined driving pony ... enough substance to pull plus the solid warmblood-ish disposition. And at 13.2 hands, easy to harness as well!

Really nice boy! It does make me want to breed ponies--even have talented granddaughter to ride them---
When I was a kid one of my friend's Great aunts was showing and jumping side saddle at 86. That became my goal when I was about 10, I thought it was so neat! Driving might work as well----- Molly

RideBarefoot: I may have made a "big" mistake ... emailed the photo of Chug to a pony breeder friend of mine and mentioned that I was now regretting that I had not kept at least one of my Hackney Pony mares to breed to him. Oops! She has offered the "loan" of one of her HP mares!

Molly
: Wish I had a talented/interested grand-daughter that rode, unfortunately I have to "adopt" ... like LisaInN.Idaho's daughter. Hmmm ... how far away did you say your granddaughter is?

I'd be happy to share and I know Jessica would love another DGM with horses, but she lives in OR, on a ranch near La Grande. They do a lot of cow work with the horses, and for fun they do ranch sorting, show or go on pack trips.

Seems to be the story of my life! I moved from Montana to Kentucky to be "closer" to the dressage/eventing market and the first pony I sold went to ... guess where? Rght ... Montana!
