2 broke ribs

Lets start this off with
My name is Todd, I am stupid, I should have known better.

Last Saturday the kids wanted to ride, no big deal. We saddled up Derby for DS and Dahli for DD. Bubba the cockeyed mule got left alone. After about 2 mins of the kids riding Bubba was rolling on the ground and twitching his tail. I walked over to him while he was on the ground like I have done many times to set on him and love him. When I got there he started to stand up and I backed off a step or two. He got up and threw his back left leg out and it connected with my lower ribs, broke two of them on my right side. Man that kinda hurt a lot! I took a few steps, headed to DW, but the air was gone out of my lungs and I went down first on a knee the flat out on the ground. When I got hit I thought 'Oh God No' then when I was laying on the ground hearing DW yell for 911 all I could think was 'how am I going to pay for that'. I kept breathing in thru my nose and out thru my mouth, and said 'don't call 911. (DW always tells me to do that breathing method with my asthma) DW told Mom not to call 911, too late the call was already made. I remember them calling back and my mom asking what to tell the 911 operater, I told DW we will go in our van, that is what mom told 911. I also remember my wife and my mom rubbing dryed manure out off of my hair and face.... glad it was dryed out!

The kids un tacked the horses super fast and rode home to Grandma's house. The sad thing about the whole deal was DS telling me 'Don't go daddy, don't go'. After I got up and walked to the van I saw him crying by the swing set, I went over there and told him that I was OK and it takes alot more than this to put me down.
It wasn't till the next day I asked him what he meant,,he said I thought you were going to die, you just layed there kinda twitching.
(insert crying daddy here)

Grandma took the kids home with her and K took me to her office and X-rayed me,, it was a hard ride into town. The x-rays showed I have 2 displaced broken ribs on the lower right side. I have been taking advill for the pain but it has gotten better,, . I hated being on bed rest for 5 days,, i did sneak out and got some chores done...the worst of it all is I have to miss horse fest in Springfield MO this Friday and Stacey Westfall will be there! I just can't take the ride.

Mom told me Sunday the day after it happened over at her house, (to watch the race and eat pork ribs)!
I really cowboy'ed up and she was proud of me.

Oh yea, one more thing,,, I drove my truck into town today and bought Kelly some roses and a card,, I took her necklace to the jeweler and got it repaired,, it is our 15th wedding anniversary today. 3-11-95

Bubba the cockeyed mule, till death do us part,,(probably mine) I think he knows he did a bad thing because Tuesday DD rode again on Dahli and her past owner was here training DD and Dahli, I tied Bubba to his tree. He stood completly still for an hour, DW took off his halter and he never strayed away from the tree, he just kept looking at me, untied head down and pityfull looking.

I've had broken ribs twice ... no fun at all. It certainly convinced me that it was time to stop riding green horses!

I had a few broken ribs several years ago, but they came with a cracked hip and a broken and dislocated shoulder from being bucked off. I can't remember which hurt the most, but I do remember thinking it was far worse than childbirth.
Hope you feel better soon, SC.

Bad stuff seems to happen very swiftly around horses. The end of my thumb was torn off by an unruly horse in a trailer... lucky I still have some left! I remember telling my sister 'my thumbs gone'. She said no it isn't (how she thought she should know is beyond me.. she was at the back of the trailer with the horse). After I said yes it is, she FLIPPED out.. and she is a nurse as am I. I did get an ambulance ride, thank goodness because that morphine was some sweet relief! I had a couple of hours of thumb reconstruction and I was sent home. Off work for 2.5 months while the end of my thumb healed up...they left it open so it would heal in a more rounded manner... looked like a hotdog with the end bit off for a few weeks!
Eventually you will heal and the pain will be forgotten.. but I bet you'll be a lot wiser!

I broke a rib once and it didn't take much for me to decide I'd rather not do that again. I hope you mend quickly.

So sorry to hear you got hurt. I suppose we all need to remember as we work with horses that we can get injured at any time. I hope you heal up quickly, glad it wasn't worse.

But I got better painkillers with the ribs!

My doctor (had a LOT of ranch patients) gave me "good" painkillers with the ribs and I'd take one with breakfast so I could go feed horses ... winter, naturally, and was having to load baled hay, take it out to the horses in the 4 x 4 pickup, unload it and feed it out.

Below freezing, not counting the windchill ... and I was pretty much running sweat by the time I got through with that. No help ... so I didn't get any "bedrest" time.

Sorry to hear you broke some ribs. No fun, I know.
Hopefully you will heal soon.

Most animals do seem to know when they have done bad and hopefully your mule will never do that again.

Ouch! Sorry to read that you got thumped Must be something in the spring air; our donkey has been kicking his heels up something wild lately, bucking and carrying on when I turn him out in the mornings. He's stalled at night so that he doesn't eat the horse's grain, and normally he walks out to the turn out like a gentleman each morning. This week he made divets in the dirt barn floor when he took to bucking around, lol.

Mend quickly

update., feeling a lot better but it still hurts to bend down to pick up something. I think I will go back to work in a day or two,, just kinda easy at it,,, I have a deck I need to finish for some great folks that understand what is going on right now.
Stinkin' mule! If I didn't love him so much I would sell him for GLUE! hahaha He is 'Bubba' the cockeyed mule!
P.S. I love it in the mornings when I leave for work,, he races me out the driveway all the way up the hill. Some times I back up and we start over and do it again. Just like the zebra in the movie 'Racing stripes'.... He beats me every time when I am in reverse.

Update,
feelin' pretty strong, still a little iffy' pushin and pullin but much better. I can sleep on my side as of last week...happy dance here!
I am much more confident around Bubba than I was a few weeks ago. I thought he was out to get me when I was in pain,,, but he is still the sweet little guy I know he is.
It was totally my fault, he was worked up and I didn't read the signs he was giving me.
I guess I sound like an abused spouse,, (he only hit me because I deserved it)....
I will give him this one,, inexperience on my part.
Much wiser now!
P.S. he is wearing down the older mare's bossy ways,,,good or bad not sure, just glad the IN-fighting is settling down.

Since nothing much can be done for broken ribs other than being tightly taped up, I always just tried to avoid a coughing spell, or heaven forbid a sneezing fit...Glen
