Crap.......... lightening!!!

We have a guys who is keeping some cows in our pasture and I went back there tonight and one was dead! We think lightening got it. The guy who owns them was here yesterday and she was fine so it was between 9 am and tonight at 7. Don't know what happened. It's been rainy and cool and she's already huge bloated so that's what makes me think lightening. I went and told him (he's amish so no phone to call him). He was understanding and wasn't mad at us or anything. He said it's just one of those things. He's gonna come tomorrow and see which one it is and if she has a calf. If so he'll have to take it home and bottle feed it most likely.
Just a bummer evening.......... just wanted to rant I guess.

Being Amish I don't know if he insures animals or not, probably doesn't. But if he does, call the vet to have the animal certified dead from lightning and then contact the insurance company about it. I've collected a couple of times from cows dead from lightning.

It isn't uncommon for livestock to be hit by lightning and it's generally not hard to tell when they have been. You'll freqently notice scorch marks left as the electricity leaves the body, between the back legs is a good place to check.
