I had this happen with a goat; the vet cut away the flopping horn and cauterized it with a dehorning iron. He did trank the goat first. (Gosh, I love spending a whole lot of money on a worthless animal!) (It was one of my wethers.)

The horn did grow back somewhat, into kind of a curlicue. Good luck and I hope your guy comes out OK.

From what I have been told, maggots aren't a bad thing. They only eat dead flesh, and I too thought they would eat right into an animal until they killed it. Everyone tells me it's not the case. They are actually using maggots on human wounds now to keep them clean and free from infection. I'm grossed out by them, so I don't like any contact with them that I can avoid, but in a wound of that sort, don't assume that maggots are eating his brain out or anything. I think there is a post under the goat board titled "really gross" or something like that. Probably is on page two by now. Good luck!

yeah! I was told that too...They only eat dead skin ect. But on the sheep board i was told that Fly Strikes the maggots eat the sheep alive. So i dunno what to think. If this is a steer you've raise..De-horn them. It will make things like this not happen, and they will prolly sell for more at sale. Have your vet come and take the horn out. and then take theother horn out if he can. Packers and such will look for anything to steal on an animal. Adios! Best of luck!!
