what kind of cow

i was at the sale barn tonight and they had three cows and a calf they all looked alike .......there big bagged like a holstien head like a holstien........but they had red bodies almost solid and white on the spine and bellies....there heads were red.....i have looked in my book on cows and can not kind ....does any one know what kind they might be.......these were some kind of milk cow not beef..btw these are not red holstiens.......thankss john

Possibly a guernsey?? Sounds like maybe to me.

no i know those they do not have a head like a holstien

closes i have found is a norwegian red.....but there bodies was all red neck was red and head was red....on all 4 of them...like they were all just alike

How about American Lineback? Don't know if they have 'Holstein heads' or not.

My guess would be line back as well ,

I have a friend that breeds linebacks .. and actually they are a color variation in just about any breed (to my knowledge ) so they could have been red holsteins with line back coloring .. I have also heard teh coat variation refered to as Irish moile , but I could be wrong about that ...

Either milking shorthorn or some kind of cross.

Holsteins in Europe are mostly red and white, from time to time those genes will be seen here where for some unknown reason to me the farmers prefer the black and white.

i would agree with this i have pics of a couple we got at a sale and is what we are assuming they are, some are being crossed with long horn cattle as well

dale k...your the winner..i just got my accelarated genrtics semen book in and there is a picture of them on page 66.....milking shorthorn......wish i had bought the cow calf pair now....with the heifer calf sold for $800.....thanks for all the help i will know next time thanks again
