Breaking a yearling 4-H Heifer
I have a small herd of ~13 purebred limousin cattle and have 2 heifers this year I plan on breaking, due to how our farm is set up, I usually don't start breaking until they are weaned and in separate areas from the dams. One heifer is 900+lbs at 11 1/2 months and is semi broke from me messing around with her when she was a baby (she'll accept a halter and follow you for a couple minutes but after that gets cranky and doesn't want to, but will come if you really pull and convince her). The other is a 8 month little heifer about 400-500lbs and hasn't had too much contact before being weaned last month, however now she will come up and sniff you and eat from your hand, you can tell she has a gentle personality. They are penned indoors for the winter and I want to get started on them before they get bigger. I know the basics as I've worked with a couple before these guys but I want that large heifer to be a totally calm show calf as she is absolutely gorgeous and correct and the other one to be the same so I was hoping for everyone's opinion on how they would work with these guys! Like I said before, I know the basics but nothing beats experienced opinions!
Have a great day!
