Bottle Jersey Tearing up

I have read before to watch for runny eyes in bottle calves. Well, our little guy who is 2 weeks old, this morning when I went out to feed him I noticed as he was drinking a tear dropped off his eye. He didn't have any runs on either eye, snotty nose, scours, or any other signs of issues. Should I just watch him or give some meds now? We are having some crazy cold temps and winds. He is out of elements and I put a heat light with him since we sold his buddies and he is alone now. Thanks!

Bubba, I'm sure your new calf got it's eye pricked from it's bedding or from it learning how to eat feeder hay.....I've seen watery eyes on many occasions and time usually fixes most wounds....Topside

Keep an eye on it. If it starts to run a lot and get goopy put 1 cc of pen g under the top eyelid for 3-7 days.

I'm with topside. My bottle calves do this all the time. First time I did them I got all freaked out when I saw running eyes. Anything and everything can make their eyes water at that age. #1 thing is from hay. Don't feed high. I now hay them in a cutoff plastic barrel. A little dust blowing in the wind...even just the cold can do it. If it last more then a day or two then worry about it.

Bottle calves are not as fragile as a lot of people would like you to think. Do what you have read. Don't over feed the milk, don't go cheap. If something is needed get it quick. Other then that you will be fine. In my couple years of doing this I have only lost 1 and he was a freebee cuz the dairy knew he wasn't doing well. Didn't last the week, poor guy!

In another thread you mentioned blood in the manure, that's also very common. It's usually caused by intestinal irritation. Topside
