Shetland pony and Steer Calf
Hey all, I've raised a bottle baby calf (Holstein x jersey mix) since he was 4 days old. He's now 5 months and very very tame. He runs and lays with our dogs and stares at me through our living room window when he wants attention.
We are going to pick up a shetland pony today as a fun project for me, and as a "room mate" for my steer since he is alone. The pony is 8-9 months, and I'm not too worried about them getting along as long as my steer doesn't try to constantly hump him (in a playing way. We banded the steer at 4 days old so he doesn't do it in and sexual way...haha! He used to try to hump the dogs, but stopped once he realized the dogs would run off anytime he tried.)
But anyways.. the question on my mind is how do I keep the pony out of my cows alfalfa/hay?
The cow had a minor bout of bloat the other day, so we are taking him off the grain we would feed him twice a day (first time raising a cow... we are learning what to do and what NOT to do) and trying to get him to eat alfalfa instead. He's eating some now, but we leave it out for him 24/7 to urge him to eat all he will.
I've trained/ridden horses for 11 years, and I KNOW that a shetland should not be left with all the hay and alfalfa we have out for the cow... anyone have any ideas of how to keep the pony from eating the cows hay? Any contraptions come to mind?
Sorry if I rambled along in the post... post any questions you may have.
