How much lye

... to slip the hair on a steer pelt? I don't know if this is the correct forum but I figured someone here might know. Thanks.

1/4 cup rd lye to 5 gallons of water sounds about right. In other words not much at all.
Use a face shield not glasses. You are looking for a ph of 12-13.

okay, I have rooto 100% lye, so I should mix 1/4 cup of it with 5 gallons. I have gloves and eye protection. It's the same lye I will be using for the tallow soap I'm making. I plan on locking it up in my fully enclosed horse trailer once I set it to soaking.

I have to admit I am a little nervous about using the lye. I've never handled a caustic substance before.
