Moving Cows Photos

Thursday is the big day. All the steers calves (And a few heifers) are heading for the sale barn. Which means that we moved them and their mamas today. It was about a 3 mile trek. Now, Thursday morning we should be able to get an early start and have them into town before noon. Fingers crosses that they stay where we put them, and don't break out into the bigger pasture....

Here's a few photos, and for anyone who wants, here is a link to some videos.

There's a really big hill that we like to avoid so rather than take the cows down the road, we circle the hill and the slough at the bottom, and use the neighbours field instead. Less chance of meeting a vehicle over the top of the hill..

Once we get around the hill, we rejoin the road.

Moving down the road towards the yard, and the rest of the cows.

The girls that had the heifers on them. We weaned all the replacements on Monday. The rest will go to the sale barn with the steers Thursday.

That is a beautiful scene. I love to hear the strategy and thinking that goes into the non-routine moves.

WOW thank you for posting the pictures and the video. I wish I could be out doing something like this instead of riding a desk. That dog sure earns his keep.

Ha, I'm back finally. Been busy around here with cattle work, and I also work at the stockyards 3 days a week this time of year!

I'm glad you all enjoyed the photos and video! It was a pretty nice day for a cattle drive, especially in late October!

The cows are now back over where they came from. DH and DS moved them a couple days ago, since the neighbours called and said that a couple cows were out. Now they should be happy for a few more weeks, or until the snow falls anyways. Then it will be time to bring them all back home. (We are about 1/2 hour from where the cows are). Once they are back home, there is about a month of grazing depending on the weather. If we are lucky we won't have to start feeding till late December or even early January! They will winter about 1 mile from home and then the end of Feburary we will move them to the home quarter, and start sorting the heavies off into the calving pen as they are due to start calving Mar 10. My time sure does fly!

That sounds like a good arrangement. I'm hoping to graze until mid January here, but I am practically half way to Mexico. When do you get to go back to grazing in the spring?
