What to feed...

We bought our first heifer and she is due to freshen April 1st. What else could we feed her besides hay for optimium health?

Minerals. Free choice.

Dairy or beef? "Freshen" makes me think dairy, but don't want to assume. I only graze and offer free-choice hay year round for my dairy cows. I feed a full bucket of Chaffhaye (chopped/fermented alfalfa) at milking and for about a month leading up to calving.

For beef, just grass and hay.

How old is this heifer? What breed? Good, loose mineral free choice would be a good start. Depending on her age, her body condition, and the condition of your pasture, a little good grass/alfalfa hay would not hurt. More information is needed, please.

Good hay and free choice mineral is all she needs right now. If you intend to milk her I would start now with a coffee can and a bag of grain getting her used to a stanchion and being handled a quart of grain is plenty to get her to come when you call her and get her into a stanchion it really helps when they know a routine before the stress of calving
DEKE01 and AngusLover like this.
