Weaned calf eating whole cob

Our weaned heifer calves are about 600 lbs. We have extra sweet corn and thought they could use some roughage from the pearl millet field they are grazing, so we started feeding them entire stalks with corn still on them. They eat it all but shake out the corn. We have watched them seemingly swallow the cob without much chewing. Should we be pulling the corn off and breaking it up? Thanks!
