Injection Reaction

Last week I treated a couple of our cattle with LA300 that were developing pink eye. Both received injections in the same location - front shoulder area in that 'triangle' where the med's manufacturer recommends giving the injection. The manufacturer's website states, also, that subcutaneous or inter-muscular are both OK in that region.

One has shown signs of improvement, but the other has not, and has a large knot in the area of the injection.

What is going on here? and what should I be watching for in the recovery of my cow?

I did treat her again today, this time injecting the other shoulder area.

Thanks as always for your insight!

The eye did not improve after the first injection. I will check her again tomorrow, but it was not better after 24 hours following her second injection. I am also going to add an Aureomycin crumble to her diet tomorrow for 5 days, as well.

Our local vet seems to believe that the treatment has only a minor improvement rate over not treating at all, and believes more times than not they will heal on their own. As bad as the eyes can become - from what I've seen in my research on pink eye, I don't want to take that chance.

When we had a breakout, we used Biomycin 200 (one injection) and all was well after that. One particularly bad case required a patch on the eye. The crumbles are a good idea. Also helps to mow tall grass so it doesn't irritate the eyes when they graze.

Here's a good article with photos of various stages. Send it to your vet, LOL?
