Going to have a calf soon! (Photos)
My Guernsey heifer is due on Sunday. I know some of us attribute human emotions to our animals but she looks and acts fed up! She put her chin on my shoulder this morning and mooed softly like she's been doing to her belly the last couple of days.
She is stringing mucus so maybe we'll see the calf before Sunday.

Thank you. I'm holding my breath because we had an angus bull calf die at birth recently. It was so sad, pregnant for nine months then nothing. He was huge and I worried about the cow.
We've only had cattle for a couple of years and don't have many so every successful birth is cause to celebrate, as I'm sure it is for everybody with livestock.

Thank you! She's my favorite of the three. Her and another calf were wild when I got them. I just stood in the middle of the stall, brush in hand, giving them a brush as they ran around me. She was the first to realize that I was doing something she liked. We've been buddies since.
She's in labor now. I thought I'd walk away for 10 minutes and the calf would be here. I'm heading back out now.

The !HEIFER! calf is here
She's not on her feet yet but should be soon. I looked more than once to make sure that I was seeing the correct gender!

Oh, thankful the calf arrived safely! And it looks like the heifer is mothering up to it. Keep up the good work. New calves are a special gift!!!

The cow was hilarious. She had the baby and was looking around but not at the calf. She had her in a tight spot next to the wall so I moved the calf out away from mom's hind legs and she finally realized something was there. The licking and vocalizations started and haven't stopped yet.
They are so much fun.

congrats!I love the cows and there is nothing better than watching a new mom and her first baby....since she is a dairy breed, and will produce a LOT of milk, watch closely for hypocalcemia....one can not afford to be too careful...just read about it and be prepared, ...... my dear friend and the
VET missed it in her heifer, also a Guernsey, and the results were devastating....side note: the vet was young and experienced more with horses not dairy breeds....
'
have fun and enjoy the new baby!

Thanks for the advice gwithrow. I reread the milk fever thread a few days ago and will keep a close eye on her.
I live near an Amish community so there are lots of vets, incl. mine, who do a good job with dairy issues. I just hope not to have any!

Everyone around here gets named by the 3 and 5 y/o granddaughters and it usually involves an argument. Same with this calf. Her name is Juniper Dawn. I'd hate to go through the naming process if I had a dozen grandchildren!
I still need to get a full face pic of her posted. Cow nose shots are my favorite.
