First calf of the year

Daisy finally popped about an hour before I shot these pictures. A frisky little bugger. I didn't want to stress her out by getting too close to her calf, but I think it's a heifer. I have two more that are due any day.

Wow, she does have a bag on her.

Hope everything goes just as well with the rest of them.

Daisy sure does have that "MINE, ALL MINE" look on her face! Glad all is well. And congratulations!

You have no idea! All my larger framed brood cows are meaner than snakes when they have calves at their sides. Today sweet little Daisy dug a pit half the size of a pickup truck by pawing at the ground staring me down, as if to say "go ahead, take one more step this way and I'll stomp your face into sausage".

Hopefully her half lowline heifer calf will be a tad more like her sire.

Well, you know, the raging hormones usually subside within 7 days or so. Many will cull a cow for that. But they are also showing that they will protect their calf and that can be a very good thing. Just have to have the means to step in safely if the calf needs help of some sort, and that can be dicey.

Yeah, I know. If they were like that all the time they'd be hamburger by now. There are plenty of critters in those woods that would love to dine on a newborn calf, so I'm not overly concerned, but it's a pain when I'd like to check on the calf.

Numbers 2 and 3. We had a chance to see both born. These mommas weren't as bat crazy as #1's momma, this year at least. #2 is another heifer, #3 couldn't tell yet, it wouldn't give us an I.D. pose.

Pretty calves.

Nice looking little heifers. Hope #3 is a heifer as well.
