lulu ten months later

This is Lulu ten months after I brought her home from the auction. She's such a small heifer at a year old that I'm wondering if maybe she is jersey. What do y'all think of her now?

Doesn't look like a jersey to me, unless she's crossed with a beef breed

I thought she was a beef breed all along, but she seems awfully small at a year old to be a beef breed. So I don't know.

She looks very healthy and fleshy, nice job! I don't see dairy in her.

I guess I haven't raised enough cattle to know what is normal. The last bottle calves I raised were twice her size at this age, part of the reason I thought the Wagyus were so incredibly small when we got them. They were more in line, I guess with Lulu, although Lulu is beefier than the Wagyus have ever been.

A year later, Bessie and Bliss (those bottle calves from a couple of years ago) are still at least twice the size of the Wagyus. I'm thinking now that they are maybe beefmaster, and maybe that breed grows bigger and faster than other cattle.

On a separate question, how long do you hold your heifers back for breeding? At a year old, Lulu looks only half grown to me. I'm not thinking she'll be ready even by late fall. Is it normal to wait til closer to two?

Since you are concerned about her size, I would wait until she is close to two years old before breeding.
