Annie came back into heat this week..sigh
well, I must have just missed the heat last time, she came back into heat yesterday, I gave the AI gal a shout as soon as the earliest date came up well in advance so we were ready, she went into standing yesterday midmorning I think, vocalizing and acting silly, and we did the ai yesterday PM, then just for good measure, as she seemed to still be allowing Walden to mount her, again this morning, AI tech said she thought she was going out, don't care, rather safe than sorry....finger, toes, eyes crossed...we went with a different bull, one she normally has in stock...so maybe this time is the charm! The bulls name is Tbone, who is also A2 A2 I think....please please please, I spent a ton this time, but just maybe we got this..it has been a very long almost four years!! Coop will not come in until tomorrow the earliest, hoping Walden got er done....she definitely seems to have skipped a heat, she is never subtle about feeling pretty...

Farmgirl6, what's the four years reference? Annie's not that old, is she? Has she ever calved?

No, she caught a bit off guard, I was relentless with the poor AI gal about coming out and doing her. I think we got her perfect; for only the second time ever I saw her have signs of ovulation the morning after the second AM breeding. We also went with a bull she stocks all the time, who is very nice and actually cheaper than the bull I got.

she turned 3 in March, and no, I have never been able to get her bred, until I got little Walden last year it was near impossible to tell when she was in heat so I think out of like six trys before this maybe two were close. Am beginning to suspect the semen I bought almost two years ago was not great, despite being pricey - I think it was too old, but who knows- that combined with being able to get the ai tech out was a bit of a challenge....thinking this could be the magic ticket!

Properly stored semen should keep indefinitely. If neither the bull nor AI have not been successful after this much time, I think I'd have a vet check this cow.

That sounds a bit like "it's not what's true which counts, but what we believe is true!"
Why are you so determined that this animal be successful? Is she only a pet?
I gave up giving heifers those sorts of chances, because they'll always demand them, ever after, and always cause worry and delay.

I am hoping she is going to be my milk cow, but truthfully she is more pet than anything else, picked her up at a gas station, just a couple of days old, maybe a week, guy pulls her out of the back of the pickup truck and she was sick and smelling terrible with scours. developed a raging respiratory infection and slipped in and out of coma and nearly died, spent a day or so riding around in the back of my hummer hooked to an IV when I had meetings I had to attend. she is a perfect size, very nice friendly easy going affectionate cow. I blood tested to make sure she was not a free martin, she is fine. Tech examined her and said she seemed normal, she was too small for my vet to examine. she tests as having the A2/A2 genetics and has all the cool characteristics of old jersey, striped tongue, corkscrew tail. to be far, I think our efforts up to now were at best sketchy; it was nearly impossible to tell if she was in heat, the AI tech was hard to get a hold of, and I am thinking the straws might have gone through a bit then they should of, being shipped and sitting for a bit, being moved from tank to tank. at least three of the times I've little doubt it was too late, and the more I learned at least twice before I think to early, just as she came into standing heat, instead of the window as she is coming out... One time I felt confident but she was very young and just now seems to be developing. I thought she might be the end of last year, she developed a bag and even began giving a bit of milk, but think the little bull calf may have been sneaking in for a nurse and got her going.

Maybe it is time to build a ramp for Walden?
Or get him some elevator shoes?

Feed is too expensive and life is too short to waste time on a cow that won't breed.

your probably right but you are talking to a gal with a 2000 fourteen year old pet steer I just do it as a hobby, so the pleasure I get from keeping them is well worth it...I just hate to fail at trying anything particularly after all the planning....well, I guess we will see
