There is a cow in the herd that I milk that the farmer is thinking about culling because she's a low-production cow, and always has been. Right now, she's about 150 days in milk, and only made 48 lbs. on the last test. She's a sixth-lactation cow, last calved in October 2013, was preg-checked recently, and is due with her next calf near the end of October 2014. She's a Holstein and her calf will be an A.I.-sired Holstein too.
I've been milking this cow for nearly 7 years, and she has never done anything exceptional! She always calves with no problems, breeds back on time, and never gives us any trouble in the parlor (which is probably how she's managed to stay in the herd so long despite being a low producer, LOL). She's never been lame, and I can't recall ever having treated her for mastitis. For an older cow, she's in good shape, and probably could go a few more rounds easily, especially on a family farm.
Location is Beaver County, PA ... near 15050. I'm pretty sure she could be had for pretty close to the slaughter price, although I'm not sure what it is right now. I bought another cow off this farm in December and paid $1,000 for her, so you can use that as a guideline. If you are interested, PM me with any questions you might have, and I'll try to set something up for you with the farmer. I'm not looking to make a buck off this deal myself, just trying to see a nice cow go someplace besides the slaughterhouse.
