Our Calving Setup

I took this video today, thought people might be interested in how we handle the cows at calving time. It has been especially cold here the last few days. Today was quite a bit warmer, but still chilly enough that if possible we like to have to cows in the barn to calve. So I saw this old girl down in the windbreak calving. When I first noticed her she had just had the waterbag, so I figured I better go get her up before I had to haul the calf up in the sled. The temps are around -10 to -15 C at the moment, not dangerously cold, but cold enough.

Since I had my cell phone with me, well I try to always carry it when I'm out checking cows, makes life just a bit safer if I can call for help in an emergency. Anyways I decided to video bringing the old girl up to the barn. She's been there done that, it's not the first time into the barn for her, and I figured she'd be pretty easy to bring up. They sure aren't always like her! So here you go..... A trip up the hill to the barn with me!

First a couple photos
This is me.....one of the few times you'll see my face on that side of the camera, and DD's ex 4H cow in the background....

And a shot of the cows on the straw, wouldn't be surprised if they all calved tonight... but only 1 is calving in the photo

Now the videos, it took me less than 10 min to get her up the hill and into the barn.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, she had the calf about 1/2-3/4 of an hour later. I'm looking at her on my TV right now. Don't know what it is though!

LOL!
Well that was a fun virtual jaunt through the herd.
You were burning some calories.
IDK why they always want to try and hide behind all the others.
Safety in numbers, I guess.

I couldn't get the 2nd video to play though.

ETA: Okay, I got it to play.
What a good smart mama she is once her options were removed.

Thanks for sharing a bit of your day with us.

"Look lady. I don't know what you have planned for me 'up the hill', but this hay is all I care about." (Awnry Abe. Cow Whisperer. At your service).

Great fun. Thanks! I have a dirt internet connection, so I only made it through about a minute. I really like the hay fortress. Those cows have it made.

For some reason I cannot edit my first post, and since the photobucket videos were overloaded, here's the same videos on youtube.
