Question Silage

What have you used for silage? I know typical corn and alfalfa grass or just plain old grass hay. But what else Could be used? Like oats, rye, barley grasses?
Just curious. What have you successfully ensilaged?

Wheat. Anything you mentioned as long as is either chopped or baled green and wrapped.

Any cereal grass will work well. If you cut in the boot stage your protein will be higher if you go for dough stage your energy will be higher.
Peas and oats are still a popular combo for silage around here.
Milo would work and I suppose even sorghum sudan grass
Cut and ensile at the proper moisture level.

Winter wheat and winter rye also. Yeap Sudan grass can either be chopped or baled and wrapped. Do not put sorghum/ Sudan grasses in a upright silo. Just a sticky mess to get through the unloaded.

We put lots of sudan grass in an upright silo but you need to cut it and let lay until it is the right moisture. We liked to have some on hand if we had grass that was too dry, put green sudan on top. You can make silage or haylage out of most anything. We made silage out of green bean vines, peppermint straw and sweet corn residue after picking for the cannery. Some makes better, some makes poorer, same as hay. If we were making hay and it rained or was going to rain we just put it in the silo....James

Even corn can be a mess to get out of a silo if put up a bit too wet.
We put up a 20x70 and I was so happy that I wasn't going to have to hand unload the old smaller silo out in the field. But the next year we put up some really wet corn and the new unloader wouldn't throw it out so I was back to running the fork for a while...
