Best solar hot wire kit to get?

So I have access to a little over an acre of mixed trees, grass and a pond that I have been given permission to have livestock on.

As its not mine I am NOT putting permanent fences in so am looking at the best solar electric fence option.

Which one is best?

I will be keeping in a horse, a couple of cows and five pot bellied pigs.

Measure out how many feet of fence you plan to have. How many hot wires. number of hot wires times feet of fence equals minimum size of fencer. Say you come up 5000 ft of fence 4 hot wires that equals 20000 ft. 5000 x 4 =20000 /5280 =3.78 so a 5 mile fencer will work. That is a little much (no. animals )for that size. And pigs are notorious for digging under a fence. Best is ParMak ( http://parmakusa.com/subcategory_details.php?SId=2 ) expensive but worth every penny. I would recommend t post with caps ( http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/stor...ost-caps-25-pk ) for horses. Use the pin style isolator that clip on. http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/stor...post-insulator

call Parmak and ask their advice...they are helpful and the product has been reliable for me...I have both of their solar energizers, one for a big area and the smaller one to use for temporary enclosures as well as small areas....

A strong battery powered charger will beat any solar powered one you can buy. Add a 12v marine battery and a cheap solar battery charger to keep the battery charged, and you have the best you can get.

Harbor Freight has their 45w solar kit on sale for as little as $139 at times. That's what I have been using for 4 or 5 years with no problems.

I charge one mile of 5 strand fence plus 1/2 mile of 3 strand cross fencing. There is enough power to provide LED lights in the barn for a while every night.
Allen W and Dreamfarm like this.

How far away from AC is it?

If not too far, it might be better to just put an AC charger where you can and run wire out to it.

Its about 4,000 feet away from a power point. Not sure if that much cable would be better than solar.

I have a small pasture i use that i put 2 hiefers in just to keep that ate down its about 2 acres i have a gallager B85 battery fencer with an okd car battery put in a little box to keep out of weather and a cheap solar panal sitting on top of the box. The panal keeps battery charged up all summer and theres good juice on fence. I test weekly to be sure always has 8-9000 volts on it. I have 2 plug in gallager fencers one on each my big pastures that are 70+ acres each and they run 6-7000 volts. Ive had lightning hit the plug in ones and ive moved the 2 hiefers in with rest of the cows moved the battery fencer to the big pasture and was still puttin 6-7000 volts on there. I wont buy anything but a gallager fencer i got 3 and only problem ever had was lightning hitting nothing mecanical and theyre far from new. They always say good fences make good neighbors well a good fencer helps alot to! What ever you go with dont go just for cheap price. Loose animals get expensive fast

If you want the best, go with Premier1. Excellent customer service, and the solar charger/battery setup I have has been a workhorse.

I believe Gallagher has a system that is a decent second.
