How much for a Jersey bull?

What would be the going price for a healthy 2, almost 3 yr old Jersey bull? He is small but not miniature. He has daughters so he is fertile. He is also very quiet and gentle and easy to deal with. We were going to butcher him, but he's such a nice bull, we thought we might try to sell him and use the money towards a beef steer instead. Not sure what to ask for him. I'd guess him at maybe 800 lbs.

Butcher price. There is nothing about your bull that would make him valuable as a breeding bull other than his reproductive tract.

Which is???

You have never seen the bull or his progeny so there is really no reason for your apparent attitude. I didn't expect some special price for him, just want to know what a healthy Jersey bull is worth because I've had two inquiries and I don't go around selling dairy cattle all day.

Guy at the feed store said 1.50 a lb, maybe, so was thinking $1,000 anyway? Yes, no? If you don't want to answer helpfully then no need to respond at all.

Alright, then sell me on why this bull should be sold as a breeder.

Does he have an outstanding pedigree?

What kind of Milk Test results did his mother have? Milk Test of his sisters?

What type of female do his sibling brothers throws?

Does this bull throw females with great udder conformation?

A gentle temperment in a dairy bull is a warning sign to many of us.

Yep my post seems pretty harsh, but I tire of the attitude that every animal is a "breeding animal" simply because it has w working reproductive tract. This attitude is the reason many minor breeds are being ruined.

Sorry for my rant.

$1.50 dressed weight would be about right.

I sold a very friendly, laid back yearling bull to a guy some years ago with instructions to use him quick and eat him. They kept him, and a half year later he almost killed the guy's dad when grandpa was messing with him. Couple weeks in the hospital.

In hindsight, I would only sell to a dairyman that understands the dangers, and of course, they don't want an average bull when they can AI to the best in the world.

Jersey cleanup bulls go for around .60 a pound at my local auction.
But if he has good cows behind him, and in a private sale I would think you might ask more. Check out you're local market report. The prices could be better where you are.

I don't feel like you're being harsh, more just that you were being assumptive and you were more interested in putting across a point than answering my question.

Look, I get it. I breed nubian dairy goats. My next two bucks are being flown in from Wyoming from a herd I've studied for years and dam lines I've been watching for years. I GET all the stuff you are asking. But not everyone does that. I can tell you he has nice conformation. I know the guy who had him before us was happy with his daughters. I don't know much more than that because I don't have the interest level in dairy cattle than I do with dairy goats.

I'm not here to sell him to you. Do you think everyone buys a bull with an outstanding pedigree? I'm here to find out what this bull if worth if someone wants to buy him. This would be for a private sell for someone who is looking for a bull like that. Because for someone with a couple cows that wants a halfway decent bull, they want one that is easy to deal with and on the lower end of the dangerous scale. He's easy to handle becuase he's respectful and low key.

I already know so-called "gentle" bulls are usually dangerous. I have trained horses, including an aggressive (but "gentle", ie, not spooky, ie VERY confident, hence the problem) stallion. I've worked around large, intact male livestock before. Animal behavior is what I do every day, day in and day out and have for many years now. The reason a bull that is what most people call "gentle" is dangerous is because of it's lack of fear of humans. A pet and usually spoiled. I don't mean that I can pet him and brush him and put little bows in his hair. What I mean is he is a level headed animal. He is not terribly fearful of humans but he is respectful and has a calm demeanor. Any bull can be dangerous and I'd never tell someone he's a "safe" bull. But for family with a couple cows who wants a little jersey bull, he'd be well suited. I'm just trying to figure out what to answer for people who are asking for a price.

He's not even actually my bull, I'm just helping here. I can't seem to find any for sale.

You have been given prices by more than one person. If you do not want answers do not ask questions is how it works on most forums. You will have a very hard time finding prices on something that rarely sells. As was said the AI aspect cuts demand greatly.Since he is not a virgin bull it is another strike against his sale. The best thing to do is price at mkt. price(slaughter) or do like most folks and take a cute picture to go with a cute story and price like a pet.

What makes you think I didn't want answers? The only comment I complained about was the one without numbers.

I appreciate the answers, sorry I didn't say so. I meant to, but was distracted. So thanks again.

In Oklahoma he would have to be trich tested to sell for a breeding bull since he isn't a virgin bull.
