Joining the Cattle Club

After starting our small farm with goats and chickens, a friend of ours gave us this Miniature Jersey steer. Got to love those moon eyes. His name is Chuck.

Blue Ridge, how old is this little guy? Is he still on milk or milk replacer? What's the story on him?

Depending on his age, etc., you might want to have a fecal sample checked by your vet and see if he needs deworming. And ask the vet's recommendations for anything else he might need given his age and history.

Yes, expressive eyes...give him your best efforts!!!

He is 8 months old and is not on milk.

A friend of ours recently relocated and sold off his entire herd of Miniature Jerseys, which he had been in for 10 years. This one looked like he was going to be bigger than the "miniature" standard; and it was about the time we bought our farm. So, the arrangement were made to let him live out his (short) life here.

Don't let the moon eyes comment mislead you, though. We are a practical homestead, where all our animals have a purpose - no "pets". Ultimately, a steer has only one purpose. So, we will raise him for about another year.

8 months....okay, then I still say he needs to be wormed if he has not yet been...I'm looking at the "hay belly" on him.
