Maybe Buying Half a Beef?

Friend has Guernsey Steers about 800 pounds. He said he would sell for $1 a pound Live weight, haul to the Butcher, then we pay Butcher.

Ok I already know they won't have the fat a Beef Breed would have but have found Holstein tougher.

Just not sure if this is a fair price?

Around here 800 lb beef steers are selling for $1.60 to $1.80 / lb. I don't know about dairy breeds but $1 / lb sounds like a bargain. I would worry more about an unfinished steer at 800 lbs. It's gonna be far from prime beef.

I would never argue with a ksfarmer about cattle farming and other things and I think he is right about this. I don't think anyone will get rich or anyone will get hurt on this. More meat there than in a big buck deer and venison is good too. Enjoy it.

Buying 1/2 of an 800# Guernsey is more like buying a 1/4 of a beef breed steer.

Ok went to the Local Locker, they could get us a Angus about same size Corn Fed for $110 more around $1,350. We was going to go half with our Son. He couldn't afford it at this time maybe couple months. The Guy at Locker said no problem give him couple weeks notice so he could have a chance to go to Feed Lot and pick the best.

We asked about buying a Whole Hog now? He says I have a half ready to go now for $180. I said ok, he had it cut packaged in half hour. Like I told him yes I could fatten couple up my own but Grain prices and dealing with them, seems better this way.

I think it is a good win-win price. He would probably get around .80 at the sale barn, but you would pay more for an unknown. The hauling makes it even more worth it in my book. Him being your friend should give you some insight into what you are buying. Our family cow when I was growing up was a guernsey. I am quite familiar with the flavor. I think dairy/beef X make even better freezer meat.
