Newbies Checking out a mini-jersey heifer & calf
Tomorrow we will go see about a mini-jersey and her bull calf. First ever cows for us. According to the seller, Momma is 6 and the calf was born August of this year and is being weaned. She is a registered mini jersey and the calf's sire is also a registered mini jersey, so he could be registered as well. He is 27 inches tall now at 3 months.
Our intent would be to get the calf castrated right away and grow for meat. We do not want to raise a bull. Momma has been milked previously so we would plan to milk her and maybe AI for another calf. We'd like to drink the milk, make yogurt and butter and use the whey for chicken feed.
So after we get more information about why they're being sold, see them in their current conditions and check them out - what else should we ask? Seems like we ought to have some kind of vet testing done, but we're not sure what to ask for. Suggestions for helping us decide?
