help planning her a.i. "date"

We're still drying off so I can get her body condition built back where I want her so this is a months ahead of time plan.

I want to have her AI'd with sexed semen. Looking for bull recommendations from those of you that have jerseys. Would like a little longer back teats (my hands are small and I can only use 2 fingers to milk) and possibly better fore udder support. Absolutely don't want to change the temperament. Stronger legs might be nice but I'm not good with judging conformation.

No help with the bull but I would wait 2-3 months, to give her more time to recoup....James

Are you aware that sexed semen is advised for use on heifers only? Poor settling rate on cows.

Wasn't aware of the advisory so that's a bit disappointing and I am planning on waiting at least that 2 or 3 months but probably more. I prefer late April or May for calving.

I used a sexed Jersey straw in a mature Angus cow to create a milking daughter. I made sure the insemination timing was spot-on - middle of the night, by torchlight - and got my nice heifer. She's a great cow. Sire was Yosemite Lemvig Brook Rasmus, simply because that's what the semen company had available as I was purchasing the rest of my order.

for any type of dairy semen I use accelerated genetics out of Wisconsin and the bull I have been getting is Louie not only does his daughters great udder length and support but he is one of the tops in the breed for net merit - fluid merit- cheese merit . I have 2 of his daughters milking now they just started 1 month ago they are the best by far .I just bred AI d my other cows to him he cost 5 bucks more per straw than the other bulls they have but you get what you pay for. www.accelgen.com is the site

What did you choose, did she get in calf and has it all happened by now?

If you contact a semen salesperson with your "wish list," he or she can surely direct you to the right bull!

No reason why you can't use sexed semen in a cow vs. heifer, just know that the conception rate is a bit lower. You could always inseminate her with 2 straws of SS and double your chances!

I'm interested in Holt Creek Jerseys in Nebraska.

They feature New Zealand genetics.
