Semen Tank

I know its more common for cattle folks to AI so I hope you can help, I am looking at getting a tank for my very small operation, keeping a buck here is not feasible.

this seems like what I need, I wont be keeping much semen at the moment and probably will never keep enough in there to get the full use out but this seems to have the longest life for the money as far as the charge goes.

Is having to tie the canes of straws together, mind you I have never seen a tank or used a tank in person (going to an AI class this month).

also I only plan on buying enough semen to breed my does yearly, I am not into the whole collecting thing (yet and prob never) once done do they store well or should you always keep a charge going?

We AI our dairy cows (well the tech does, not "we" personally) and I know he has to charge his tank every so often. I would wait until you go to the class. I'm sure they are going to talk about the equipment and may even know where you can get some good used equipment.

We have both a tank and also keep straws from our collected bull at an AI facility. I'm not familiar with the tank you're looking at, as ours is larger so I don't have an idea about having the straws tied together, but it seems as though that is if you're going to use the full capacity If you're just storing a few straws in it for a short time the canisters should hold what you're going to need without tying the canes/straws. Unless you have close access to a gas or welding supply place that has a constant supply of LN it takes some time and effort to get it filled. As long as you're going to have straws in it you have to maintain it or you're going to lose the straws. If you're only going to use it for a short time it isn't necessary to keep it filled.

This tank scares me. First off, it only takes a few seconds of exposure to ambient temperatures to ruin your semen. I wouldn't want to have to monkey around with it. You should be able to go directly to the semen you want, grab it out, and get the rest back into the nitrogen in about five seconds.

Secondly, Shipping semen is around $200, and that's not something I'd want to do every year. The cost for charging a tank is mostly in the service, not in the product, unless you have a huge tank, so the way to save money is to have a tank that will satisfy your storage needs (or maybe be a bit bigger than you really want), but has a really long hold time. The CT tank only has a hold time of 42 days (!!!). If you don't use up all the semen you buy each season, this thing will cost you LOTS of money keeping it charged. If you do, you'll spend lots of money shipping semen every year.

May I recommend this tank? http://salem.craigslist.org/grd/3959218116.html Static hold time is 215 days, and it doesn't take a lot to fill the tank. My supplier will fill it for $30, and since I don't open it often, that happens only two or three times a year. Also, the canisters are deep enough that the AI tech can easily grab whatever canes he wants without having to monkey around, possibly damaging the semen.

Figure filling 10 times a year on the tank you're looking at, presuming you don't want to throw out your shipped semen each year. That's $300 for the CT tank. Worst case, my tank costs $90 to fill for a year. That's a $210 difference in one year which, given the $45 shipping cost on the CT tank, will pretty much make up the difference in price between the two tanks.

Hope that helps.
