grain screenings?

I have an opportunity to buy a load of corn screening from a local farmer that he pulls out of his drier..... If I wean my cows onto it would this make a decent supplemental feed for them along with pasture?

Don't feed it to pregnant cattle or young calves. In my experience this is a cesspool for mycotoxins.

It's cheap for a reason I would be careful about feeding it. I have not seen very good grain screenings oslty good for wild bird food they can pic out hte better stuff

If by "buy" you mean pay any amount of cash other than 0, no. Great way to find new and wonderful weeds if his corn wasn't clean as well.

They make a feed mix at work that is about 50% corn screenings called feedlot starter. It is the cheapest mix they sell and very popular. I delivered 12 tons today to a guy feeding Angus yearlings out on it.

To clarify, our screenings come from the cleaning plant.

Any screenings I've ever seen was composed of weed seeds, trash, and some cracked grain. Not very high on the feed value. Good bird seed.

Best to used screenings for fertilizer after they've been piled and composted to kill the weed seeds for a while.

Seen a few calves bloat and die after getting in to where they should'nt be and eat a belly full of them a few years back.
