signs of cocidia

Its been like 3 years since I raised calves and Iforgot the signs to cocidia but I had 1 die and 1 doing the same thing the other one did before he died won't drink can't get up easy has the runs bad (it smells like rotten milk)

No blood in the poop and its a off color yellow

My question is what's wrong my guess is cocidia cause when I was raising calves I lost a lot due to that and we moved them in the barn to a new area bleached the floors and walls raised 4 calves 3 months ago there none died cleaned it again with bleach and had these calves for a week and already lost one or maybe had them 2 weeks I'm not around the note book when we got them

There jersey calves if that helps

Need to know kinda fast going to town tonight and can get stuff to treat them if needed

probably scours not coccidiosis , coccidia takes 21 days to affect the calf if the calves are not at least 3 weeks old thats not it . My guess would be viral or bacterial infection

I had a little jersey calf I brought in this spring from someone I trusted and got salmonella. I ended up losing the calf before I could get the results back from the state but had 1 of ours get it and saved it. No matter how much it ate it looked like it was wasted and would trip and fall,no scours at first. Then it got white ,runny really smelly scours. The vet gave us tribressen for a treatment of 5 days. With the 2nd calf I gave it charcoal tabs and terramycin scour tabs until we got the results and it kept it alive, plus tons of electrolytes. Makes me think with the smell of the poop this may be it. Smells like no other and they get weak fast. Hope this helps.

Forgot to say that this is more than likely in the calves when you get them, not necessarily your barn. I'd say mine was probably close to 10 days before it started to show scours.

Yep, 17 to 21 days per the Merck Veterinary Manual.

Your vet may have found coccidia in the stool sample, but that doesn't mean it was the cause of disease. Calf could have recently ingested, but not causing a problem.

Which reminds me when my boy was about 3 years old he had some vague bowel pains. We took him to world-class specialists in Utah for various tests and biopsies. One sample showed the parasite, giardia, a similar bug to coccidia. So we treated him for weeks with a high powered drug that turned him yellow. Still no improvement, so I flew him to an Army doc in Colorado who immediately diagnosed his problem correctly - he didn't want to poop so was holding it in until he got backed up! A few enemas, and he decided pooping was better.

The moral of the story is the presence of a bug does not mean its the cause of disease.

Are you sure the calves had a good dose of colostrum the first few hours after birth? Without that, an assortment of bugs will get them due to lack of immunity.

We just had a calf with coccidia, his poo was liquid and dark greenish brown with blood in it. Treated him with Corid and electrolytes and he's a new calf. Yellow diarrhea is probably e-coli or salmonella.
