Question Calf weaning- She can see him- Problems?

Hey Folks,

It's come time to wean the calf from my dexter Annabelle. Problem is my facilities do not allow for complete separation. They can still see/smell each other. I wasn't really too troubled by this until someone wondered out loud if she would have trouble drying up if she can still see/smell her calf. I hadn't even thought about this and there is no information online. I was under the impression if there is no milk being taken from her, she'll dry up. But, I just figured I would ask you cattle smarties

How old is the calf and is it eating hay and grain well? Google "fence line weaning" and you will see that this can be a good way to wean a calf. Yes, she will dry up on her own.

ditto. this is considered the most stress-free way to go, they usually bawl for a much shorter time. but like g seddon said they need plenty of good groceries to eat.

Oh he is plenty old enough. 6 months. Kept him on so he would grow well and also mamma didnt like to let down her milk at milking time unless he was around. But it is definitely time to take him off. I didnt figure it would be an issue, but when the gal mentioned it, I didnt know what to think. Thanks folks.
