Finally! Welcome Silver!

Missy finally decided to grace us with a calf this afternoon.

Finally! Welcome Silver! - Cattle

Silver is a fine little bull calf out of a dexter bull (Sterling) and a belmont cow (Missy).

The good news is her udder came in HUGE with nice long teats and excellent openings-- it's just about a jersey udder on a dexter cow.

The bad news is she is extremely sensitive. She won't even let the calf suckle-- just kicks him away.
DH and I had to work pretty hard to wrestle some colostrum out of her for him.
She just won't quit kicking. I tried the kick rope behind her udder and over her hips that worked so well on the other cow to no avail.
I'm gonna need to tie her foot up to do it.

Anyway-- the bull-calf is in the mud room getting bottle fed.

How exciting...congrats.

So sorry you are having trouble with the momma not wanting to feed the calf...I would hate that.

Maybe she'll settle down when the hormones level out?

Don't give up. You'll have to restrain her, milk her out (save that for the calf) and then put the calf on her (while still restrained). Her udder is probably very sore and that's why she's kicking at the calf. This is her first calf?

When my cow was too full and the calf couldn't nurse I had to put her in the stanchion, with kickers, and used my Udderly easy milker that I used for the goats. Finally got enough out of the sore quarter that she settled down. Stay out of the way of those kicks, I was bruised up bad!

This is her first calf. She was doing SO good cleaning him off and getting him up on his feet, but fell flat on nursing him!

We gave him a bottle through the night and this morning-- he's kinda lazy at suckling it-- is that normal for a young calf? he drinks it very slowly-- acts like he's not hungry. Eyes are alert and bright and he's peeing and pooing fine.

Aww what a darling. I hope missy settles down a little. I was so excited to see this post. I hope she calms down some so you can get her poor sore udder milked out. Can't wait to hear of her milk quality. Keep us posted!

SHE'S FEEDING HIM!!!!!!! WOOOOOO!

I put him in with his mama when I was milking Martha so I could watch. I was thinking worse case scenario I would put him on Martha to foster and then hobble his mother and milk her out-- thankfully I won't have to do that.

His mama took him right back and started grooming him and loving on him.

I'll start milking her for house use in a few days and keep you posted on the difference between her and the full blooded dexter.
I snagged some udder pictures but not sure yet if they came out.

The calf looks so tiny in the photo, how cute! Glad the cow got some relief and will let him nurse now.

I'm awfully glad that she finally accepted him. I know you would have taken excellent care of him as a bottle baby, but there's just no real substitute for mother love.

Not to mention my plate is full already-- I'm expecting myself and I've got a cold and the holidays are here and the kids are wreaking holy terror....

In as poor shape as I am on sleep I did not covet the idea of skipping it to feed a calf many times a day! Darling though he is.

Besides, I shouldn't let myself get so attached to a bull calf by mothering it.

He is incredibly tiny!! He can't be more than 14" tall
