Wow is that a neat color. Is that a normal color for the Highlands?

Haven't picked one out yet.......of course, if someone wants to buy him, they get to help name him.

Asking 1000$ with papers(AHCA registration). At 6 mos. and weaned. And a deposit will hold him for you.

Knock off $100 ($900) for no papers.....

I wish I was closer to you...I would snap that baby up quick!
I would love to have Highlands. Are Highlands considered a specialty market or do you take them to the sell barn like you would Angus?
I read some of the research on the Highland website, and it seems that they would do okay here in California.
I'm just curious about the marketing and if they would take a hit at the sale barn. Here they love black Angus.

They take a hit at the stockyard. They say hair and horns you lose weight. No you don't. Our carcass weights are typically 65 to 70 % of walking weight. And allot less excess fat because of their hair so allot less waste of fat that gets thrown out. So you take home more meat. So once you get a customer you keep them. They like the idea of more meat for their dollar. We grass finish anyway so our customers like it. I have Sold one to a customer and they came back and bought 3 more after a couple of weeks. So now it is easy to sell one. It is hard to keep one to butcher weight. Because everybody wanting to raise it themselves so they know what goes into it. I have a guy picking up 4 weaned steers next week. So now i get more per lb. than they get for Angus. That rubs them the wrong way.(Angus People)

Highlands (along with the Dexters that we raise) are not a good choice for the "sale barn" minded folks. It is a specialty market for buyers who are discriminating in their choices for food for their family. It is a much larger market than it used to be, and I believe it will continue to grow in the future. We have a pretty steady return and referral clientele for both breeds.

Like SpaceCadet, we have trouble keeping ours long enough to raise to butcher weight, they are typically purchased prior to that by people who would like to raise them on their own acreage. The meat is very lean, and it takes pretty good forage to grass finish them (we move ours 2-3X per day using temporary fencing). We've only had one for ourselves in the past year. The steaks are long gone, and I'm just about to put some Highland burgers on the grill (at very low heat) for lunch.

In addition, if you can find the buyers, nice Highland hides can sell for $800-1000, each, though they cost quite a bit to tan, so the profits are not what you might think.

I've read that folks up in my neck of the woods, with the cold winters, will keep Highland cows, and breed to an angus bull, so that you have the winter-hardiness of a highland and the meat of an angus... Any thoughts on that? My husband are really intrigued by highlands and are thinking of getting some in the spring. do they really browse?
