Sick Guernsey Calf

Well, I finally found some Guernsey heifers. They sent pictures of both calves at a week old. One born in July; the other in Oct. we got up there and the older calf was pot-bellied, long hair, but boney, and had yellow snot in both nostrils. She had a dirty tail, so I'm assuming diarrhea. The younger calf was in the same pen, but looked much better, since she had just been pulled off the cow. They don't worm any of their cows, I was told, and they are on grass.

I passed on the older girl. For the price, I didn't want a project, and didn't want to bring that yellow snot home. Even though they'd only been in that pen together a short while, when we got the younger girl home, I saw a little yellow snot. Brother! So now I'm thinking some wormer this morning, and a shot of Baytril will be a good place to start? I bought 5 gallons of milk to transition her, and she took 1/2 gallon of milk and electrolyte last night with no problem. Her lungs sound clear.

I've got her isolated. I know, I should have left her too. Any suggestions from the pros?

Judy take her temperature, no point giving a dose of Baytril if she does not have a fever. The Baytril will kill good bacteria and set back her digestive system. If she has a fever then absolutely use the Baytril....Worming also seems like another waste of time, the calf is not old enough to have ingested enough worm larves to justify worming. JMO.....Topside

Thanks, Topside. I will take temps in a few minutes. So, why do you think both calves had yellow snot? The July calf looked pretty rough. They don't worm or vaccinate their cattle. The cow I saw looked good, though.

Maybe because they have a fever....Loads of cattle owners never worm, it usually depends on how much pasture is offered per head. Topside

When I bring a new one home a dose of medicated feed is in order just in case (trailer fever). So they don't bring something in to my herd.

Well, temp was 100.5 before she ran out of milk. The nose cleared up, but the eyes are weeping now. She is eating hay, but no interest in grain. She's LONELY. I put a radio in with her and she's happier now.

So, no shot, no worming, just spending time with her throughout the day when I can. She is very easy to work with.

She sounds like she's recovering quickly-- and that she'll be a super sweet cow to work with. Congrats on your find!

Maybe I didn't keep the thermometer in long enough. This evening, she couldn't drink her milk without stopping to cough 1/2 a dozen times. I'll check temps again in the morning.

Low grade pneumonia will cause the yellow snort. But, after having so many issues of bacteial infection in the head. I would just be on the safe side and use LA200. It will cover mycroplasma bacteria infections as well the low grade pneumonia. Also a dose if a sulfa product will help too.

So, Gave her a couple of cc's this morning, and she's shown a lot of improvement. No more snot or watering eyes. She's still on Mom's milk. She's getting 1/2 gallon of that with a quart of MR mixed in per feeding. I've got 2 gallons of that yellow Guernsey milk left. I've got to say, it acts a lot different than Jersey milk. The cream line is not as definite, and the milk doesn't go to 2% appearance after a few days.

I regret not bringing the other girl home now. However, she was in a lot rougher condition, and nearly twice the price. I know she won't get any treatment at all.
They are "all natural" grass-based, with 12 acres for 10 cows and 3 calves.

We put Bella outside today. She's enjoying the day, and likes to eat from the top of the round bale. She's even partaken from the pumpkins.

I like that topline.

She's not sure that she likes that halter, but I think she'll survive. She takes a gallon of milk/replacer a feeding. She's a growing girl, you know.

Bella looks like a nice calf and she should do well with the care you're providing (hope you'll be careful with that halter; you know how easily they can get a hind leg caught).

I think Miss Bella in Indiana and the Guernsey boy in Missouri should get together when the time comes!

Myersfarm, how about an update on your guy?

LOL! It's a long drive between here and MO. Miss Bella's first date will probably be with an A.I tech, poor girl.

I put her back in the calf barn. It's very windy here, and her snot was getting worse. Now she's getting better again. I've got a heat lamp in there just in case she wants it. The temps are dropping tonight big-time. She also has Hubby's radio for company. She drinks that MR right down; poo is good, and eating hay like a champ.
