metal feeder in winter?

Showing my ignorance here: In trying to reduce feed loss to trampling, I have been using a well built home made metal half barrel feeder that hangs on the pen pannel. It has been working well, and there isn't a lot of waisted feed. With the cold weather starting to arrive, the scene from A Christmas Story with the boy licking the flag pole is coming to mind. Should I stop using this feeder in the winter?

Or you could find a plastic barrel and make a new one. > Marc

Or line it with plastic. Get a sheet of plastic that will cover round section heat to soften (hd hairdryer or heat gun ) weight will bend it to fit barrel. Rivet or bolt it to barrel, two flat pieces to cover ends.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, these are good ideas. I was thinking that roll on bed liner might be good, I havn't priced it lately, probably pretty expensive.

In really cold weather the steel doesn't stay exposed for long. The cattle coat the steel with slobbery feed and it freezes solid.
