Calf is pulling nipple off bottle?

I have a couple of jersey/holstein bottle calves that are now about 4.5 weeks old. They rough on the bottles and I'm tired of watching them pull the nipple off the bottle and all the MR wash onto the ground. So today I'm putting their MR in a pail and feed it to them that way. I know this is not as good as sucking from a bottle, but don't have much choice.

Anyone else experienced this problem? Solution to the problem?

Do you have the kind of bottles that the nipple just slips over the top or the screw on kind? I never have liked the kind that slip on. By all means use the pails, they will drink just fine out of them. When I was a kid, that is the only way we fed calves, Dad didn`t like the nipple pails, thatsall they had back then. > Thanks Marc

I had that problem with sheep. It was time to wean them to a bucket.

when the calves get too rough or punchy, we always wean them to a bucket. They do just fine on a bucket.

If your pens are wire panel just hold the nipple against a wire in the panel so the calf can't pull it off.

I just grasp the end of the bottle with 2 fingers on each side of the nipple.

Sorry Marc, but I remember my jersey calf pulling the nipple out of the bottle ( which I was holding) after butting me. I not only got head butted but then soaked. And yes, it was below zero.

A pail. Better yet, a cow.
