Some photos

Shuffling some photo's around and decided to post a few.

Here is an image from France, the homeland of our Tarentaise cattle. That terrain is why they tend to be sound in the feet and legs.

A family group. The black steer and the heifer in front are both the calves of the cow in back.

An Angus X Tarentaise bred heifer. She was long, wide and short, a lot of cow on a small frame.

A new calf born to a first calf heifer from a couple years back. We missed getting this heifer and a couple others de-horned but their horns don't amount to much and they never abused having them. The heifer was from a set of twins and smaller than average but her calf kept right up with the rest of them.

One of my favorite pics. Love the calf's expression - like, what just happened to me!?!?!

Your cattle look very sturdy and adaptable.
Also, in good condition.

That wet calf pic is hilarious.

Do you give your brood cows names?

Great pics! The baby pic is awesome! It needs a great caption, then put on a Hallmark card.
Thanks for sharing

Thanks, all.

GAM - Almost everybody has a name because they are registered. But the ones we have had longer, they usually get a nickname. We have Fatgirl, Peewee, T, Lucy, Winter, etc. The younger ones, we tend to just use their number unless a name sticks.

Most people are surprised to learn these are dairy cattle in France. When they were imported to the U.S., they hadn't been selected for just milk, milk, milk and so did not have the "bag of bones with a huge udder" appearance of most modern dairy cows. In France, their milk is used to produce a certain traditional cheese, it is very rich. However, since that time, photo's I have seen indicate more and more udder and less and less cow, so the more balanced genetics that were brought over to North America are all the more precious. When I retire from working full time, I plan to milk some of ours, sharing with the calf.
