I just met some folks recently who raise them and they kept calling them HighlanDERS.
Purebred registered stock and everything.
They were extolling the wonders of the breed, etc and yet kept saying the name incorrectly.
Yes, I am a picky pants, I know it. Gosh though, go look at the pedigree.
I actually *had* heard of the breed before.

I think Highlanders is just a shorter and easier word for some people to say. I call mine 'Highlands' sometimes,I notice when I've looked for them on Craigslist or the Farm paper some people even call them Highlanders which you would think then at least they would put the correct name down!
And actually ,most the ones here are 'American Highland Cattle' due to the American Highland Cattle Association, and I think that is wrong, they should not cut out 'Scottish'!
That is what they are!
Jersey's are still called that even though they are not on Jersey Island anymore!
These will be the cattle that will survive the end of our world, this breed of cattle can survive in the worst of conditions. And they can live off of grass and other plants that grow in nature, and do very well on them. Plus they look really cool. > Thanks Marc

So maybe they SHOULD be called the THE HIGHLANDERS!
Immortal cows with horns of Justice! (they dont need swords, obvs)
Only one breed can survive!
From the American Highland Association Originally there were two distinct classes; the slightly smaller and usually black Kyloe, whose primary domain was the islands off the west coast of northern Scotland. The other was a larger animal, generally reddish in color, whose territory was the remote Highlands of Scotland. Today both of these strains are regarded as one breed – Highland

They are Highland cattle, but even the Highland Cattle Association calls them Highlanders as far back as the 1885 breed description. Some people in America people call them Scottish Highland cattle but I have no idea why - are there any other Highland cattle?
I hate hearing them called Highlanders...just irks me. Same as when people call Belgian horses "Belgiums", or when people say "Burmese" Mountain dog instead of Bernese.
We call ours Highland cattle, or Highland(s). Sometimes we use "Scottish" as a way of describing their modern origin.
They're also referred to as "Hairy Coos", Kyloes, Mainland Highland, West Highland (from the Western Isles off Scotland, the Hebrides)

Amen SISTER, I don`t know how many times I have heard people call my horses "Belgiums" , drives me flippin crazy. So yes there can only be one breed of cattle survive the end of times, and they will be the Scottish Highland cattle and maybe a couple Jersey`s. hehe > Thanks Marc

Once upon a time, Angus was Aberdeen Angus. And back in the early 70's, the first white cow my uncle had was a "Swiss Charolais".
If a name is too much of a mouthful for some, they will adapt it. It is a sign of acceptance/popularity for the cattle to be called, "highlanders", IMHO.

Where I grew up, Brahman cattle were called "Brimmers" So I guess what ever fits. I would wager that Piney Woods cattle would be right there with Highlands as the most adaptable breed, but I am partial. I call PW's the brush goat of cattle breeds.
