New Dexter Bull

Got a Dexter bull from a guy trying to cover his Herefords and get smaller calves. But his legs were too short and his hardware wasn't long enough to make up the difference. He did have one calf on the ground from one of the shorter Herefords, so he can get the job done. We'll see what happens.

Nice! Where you located in MI? I'm in the center. Between St. Johns and Ithica and have Dexters as well.

MEnglish - we are on the east side close to Port Huron.

WJMartin - I really like the red color too; its one of the things that drew me to this bull.

ok Tony. I'm about 2.5 hours straight west of you. All of my Dexters are red and I really like the red as well! Good luck with your new bull.

tonyb, unless my eyes are worse than I thought, I'd say that your new bull is dun, not red.

He's dun, we sold him as a calf to Van...out of our dun bull and black cow, he's a nice little bull, chondro carrier...Junior's (if that's still his name) daddy sired the 6 time Grand/Reserve champion Dexter cow Paula MD. Thanks for posting the pictures, it's nice to see how he's turned out.

Picture of his sire:

Hey lakeport, that's right, we bought him from Van. He told me Junior came from Lakeport Farms out of Shamrock Mike, so I thought it might be you guys. Junior just needed a step stool for those Herefords I guess. :-) Plus I think Van is getting out of cow/calf anyway and moving into feeder steers.

Very nice guy; I enjoyed talking with him. Don't bring up the subject of hunting dogs unless you've got some time on your hands. Haha - we talked about dogs for probably two hours.

Aha - well, obviously I'm color blind then. Your eyes can't be worse then mine.

Tonyb,

Size really shouldn't have been an issue, they find a way. Mike (who is 39" at the hip) has bred full size Angus cows that are better than 52" tall. More than once we've seen our little 1.5 year old mini-Highland who's probably smaller than Junion breeding a full size Highland, he just waited until she was pointing downhill on a steep embankment.

For those who are using very small bulls with large cows, I'd highly recommend a nice big mound of dirt somewhere in your pasture near the water or hay if it's otherwise flat.

tonyb, Junior looks solid! He should give you some nice calves. And, personally, I'll take dun over red anyday!!!

We love that dun color! Mike is ED/ED b/b, Dun, does not carry red. Mike is nearing the end of his breeding life and we've been trying really hard to get a little Mike clone to take his place. We finally got one this past fall out of one of our smaller cows. He looks just like a mini-Mike. Mike is also A2/A2. We haven't had Junior's mom Lilly tested for A2 due to her age, but she is one of our best milkers and has a really nice udder, producing 2.5 gallons a day, so Junior should pass that on to his calves. Lilly never had her registration followed through with a previous owner, so sadly she can't be registered. I think she's 17 years old now. Lilly is also one of our smallest non-chondro Dexters, at 40" tall.

Unusual to have a non-carrier only 40"...she looks in great condition for 17 years of age...I bet she could write a book on calving! You are fortunate to have her in your herd. registered or not.
