New Angus Bottle Babies!

Hi Everyone!

We just bought (2) 3-4 week old Angus babies!
1 bull calf and 1 heifer. Not twins
I wanted to say a big THANK YOU to all that help out us newbies and the sale barn/bottle babies thread gave us all the info needed.
We got them home, big stall with water, mineral block, a little Alfalfa
and MR 2x's a day.
I gave them 2 cc of LA 300 and we have no scours!
They are running around and playing.
They are soooo cute! One will be my daughters 4H project this year.
I can not thank everyone that posts all the great info!
I would not have contemplated doing this without finding this thread.
Oh, I purchased a middle-aged cow that has a 2-3month old baby and she is bred back about 2 weeks ago and she keeps coming up to the barn and checking on the babies! It is so cute!
Can you tell we are excited!
Thanks

RedRider

The 4-h project should get a different feed than normal show feed is used to fatten them up. Because you want a show animal to look perfect. Soybean hulls for protein, Beet pulp, show feed, rolled oat's. if you Have the chance to start them off right do it. And let your daughter show her in as many fairs as possible. if she gets first or better more money for her. Our daughter kept first or grand champion with another girl she made about 1000$ showing. Now she sells a calf once a year.

I think it's great that she will be showing. Just keep in mind, in order to have a winner, the feed bill will give you sticker shock. Good quality show feeds are high dollar and will cost you a fortune.

On show feed if you buy brand name it is expensive. But if you have access to a grinder mixer or if feed store can custom blend( this route may require buying in bulk 1000lb or more but if you have room to store it it is worth it.) something close or even better.
they can even add molasses if you want. Just need to know the max you can store and minimum he is willing to blend for you.

This is new to me. I've never heard of anyone selling Angus (or any other beef breed) calves at a very young age. Just doesn't make economic sense to do it.
I can understand dairy calves that are unwanted and the reason for breeding a dairy cow is to get the milk, calves are often secondary. But what reason would someone dry off a Angus cow? Seems that since you are feeding the beef cow anyway, you might as well keep the calf on her for a while. Explain, please.

I got the babies from a girl that received them from her neighbor. I don't know why they gave them to her. The mom died after birthing the bull calf and the heifer's mom rejected her. Yes, it is strange.
I don't want to put them with my new mama cow as she has horns and is very large. I'm afraid she might hurt them at this point in time.

Yes, I looked at the Show Feed and it is $24.00 a bag, and I believe it was Purina Brand.
I did buy a bag of calf starter, but have not started them yet.
I wanted them to settle in for a few days then start them if no issues started.

You can by them just about any sale day here. Calves pulled off old cows usually. Now a 3 in1 pkg. is a rare deal around here, pairs with calves that big are almost always split.
