Dehorning Paste - 24 hours later

I dehorned my new calf yesterday and am wondering what it should look like today. I've never used the paste before. I followed the instructions and just want to know what's "normal" looking for the next day.

She's 3 1/2 weeks old and doing great. She was a little mopey yesterday but by the time I brought her in the barn early evening she was back to her normal, happy self. No drop in appetite or energy level today or last night.

I can see it's all pink around the horn bud and the buds themselves look like they have a cap of scab about the size of a dime that is starting to peel away already.

How will I know if it worked right?

We use the paste and your description sounds very normal--good job. We have always had excellent luck with the paste. No horns or large scurs. I will tell you that it will look odd for several weeks--maybe like a thick dark fingernail for some time.

Like Cindy said. It takes a while to dry up and heal but the worst part is over. Just keep and eye out for flys bothering it and if you see that happening get some screw worm spray and spray it real good to get her from getting maggots in there. She should heal up really nicely.
