Raising a steer For the first time if i bought a 350 to 400 pound steer in august how much would I have to feed to get it to 900 pounds for slaughter. Would like to slaughter about December or January. And would like to Finnish on grain.

Some steers convert feed better than others but as a rule of thumb if conditions are right you can figure 7lbs of feed intake can equal 1lb of weight gain. Keep in mind it takes some good balancing of hay intake to make sure the feed you're giving him isn't running out the backend before it's utilized properly.

Gradually work him on to full feed and adjust his hay intake to keep the manure stiffened up. He will gain better on grain than hay but it's an expensive venture. (been doing it for several years with kids' ffa show steers.)
